Satiurday, May 14 Mealhada to Agueda

May 14 Mealhada to Agueda
Nò downpours today just a few sprinkles. But THE PUDDLES were unbelievable.
Very near the start of the day I entered a "woodland path."
This puddle was easy to navigate. The next  ones not so easy. After struggling to stay on 4 inch wide clay banks, pushing aside gorse, 3 more times; I decided to turn around to walk on the highway.
Just as I worked my way back to the start, Mario (my on and off walking partner) and Peter and Janelle caught up. Mario said he would see whether it was possible to proceed beyond my last puddle by scrambling up the 8 foot bank and wending a path through the woods. He never returned so I could only assume that he found a way. So back again. (It turned out there was just one more puddle.)
Then I walked alone for about three hours.  Pleasant. Are those footsteps behind me? And Mario was at my side. I walked alone, with him, or later with 2 German women the 16 or so miles to Agueda. Walking speeds vary so one is never totally "with" another walker.
How many days have these clothes been out here waiting to dry?

When I arrived in town my instructions to the hotel took me up the hill, down past a church, where I became a member of a wedding party, and through a shopping street. It was only after I had left my baçkpack in the room that ì found out that I was on the river about a half block away from the bridge I had crossed to get here.
Hearing a slight clank, I entered a dark room to find this man bottling wine.
