May 5 arrived in Azambuja

The air trip to Lisbon was long but uneventful. My checked bag with my hiking poles was waiting for me on the carousel and the autobus to town was directly outside of arrivals as advertised. I disembarked at Avenida da Libertade and easily found my hotel about a half mile up the hill. With a dinner and two breakfasts in me I had no interest in a meal but was very interested in a good stretch of the legs. So off  I went to stroll about in the city.
I did not "do the tourist thing" as some of you may know that Gene and I were here in 1989 for an extensive visit when we learned about the LA Loma Prieta earthquake from a Time magazine cover and read rumors of my retirement package from Google. We also were in Lisbon for a day this past September. However, I wanted to try out taking pictures with the camera rather than with the tablet.

A digression: I am feeling very proud. Not only did I manage to create the blog and enter the first entry at home on the computer, but also enter this data on my tablet and include photos from the camera. I hope that I soon  can figure out how to lock the SD card in the slot. My finger is sore from pressing on the Tab!

Last night I had a delightful trip: dinner with a colleague of some 40 or so years ago.

As planned I left Lisbon on the train.

Feeling ready to start

(My first selfie with the camera)

I rode past miles and miles of industrial area; the
Camino path alongside. One lonely couple visibly miserable in the drear.

After arriving in Azambuja I explored the pleasant town where I bought à sausage for the trek tomorrow. Now in my unglamorous but acceptable hotel.

  1. Just got back from Texas and will be heading back soon but so exciting to see this post. Love the juxtaposition of ancient paths to be followed via glorious modernity!

    Safe journeys ~G.
